This month - Super Fruit

Tomatoes

Tomatoes contain lycopene, which can reduce the risk of prostate cancer in men and cervical cancer in women. Processed tomatoes are richer in lycopene and the processing makes the lycopene easier to absorb. 1 medium sized tomato or 7 cherry tomatoes count as 1 portion towards your 5 A Day.

Cranberries

Cranberries contain a natural antibiotic that prevents E. coli bacteria from sticking to the bladder wall.

May also promote gastrointestinal and oral health, prevent the formation of kidney stones, lower LDL and raise HDL (good) cholesterol, aid in recovery from stroke, and even help prevent cancer.

Blueberries

Blueberries like cranberries contain a natural antibiotic and have the highest antioxidant capacity of all fresh fruit. They are thought to lower ‘bad cholesterol’, improve vision, prevent certain cancers, aid digestion and help keep the urinary tract healthy. A large handful counts as 1 portion towards your 5 A Day.

Avocado

Avocados are packed with vitamins and antioxidants that help protect the respiratory system. They also contain beta carotene, potassium, fibre and folic acid. Contrary to popular belief are not fattening. They contain monounstaturated fat which helps lower 'bad' cholesterol. Just half an avocado counts as one of the five portions we should aim to eat each day.
